About Ghagial
Ghagial is a part of the Kandi area of Hoshiarpur district. This area is considered the most water stressed part of the district. There is acute shortage of water in this area and this area faces high incidence of soil erosion which is caused by the rivulets (choes) passing through this region and are flooded during the rainy season.
Soil of this region is poor. Two-third area is sown under rain fed conditions. Maize and wheat are the major crops of this region. The ground water development in two blocks viz Tanda (189%) and Hoshiarpur-I (109%) of the district has exceeded the available recharge and thus the blocks have been categorized as over exploited
Objectives of Ghagial Water Security Plan
Balance the demand and supply of water (consumption & conservation) in the village and make it water-wise self-sustainable or water secure village
Zero Rainwater Runoff – All the rainwater that falls over Ghagial or flows from surrounding catchments (if any) should be absorbed within the village through rainwater harvesting and pond revival
Prevention of Soil Erosion – Soil erosion caused by rainwater runoff is to be controlled through plantation, field management and water management
Sustainable Groundwater use – Community level groundwater management
